Have You Considered Natural Health Care?

Wendy Snow Fogg is the founder and owner of Misty Meadows Herbal Center. She has worked with the healing plants for more than 20 years. The scope of her practice includes herbal healing, nutrition, Reiki, reflexology, flower essences, ear candling and facial, tongue and pulse diagnosis. If you would like to explore a more natural health maintenance style for yourself and your family, call 659-7211 to arrange an appointment.

The philosophy of herbal medicine is to discover and heal the cause(s) of imbalance manifested as illness in the body, thereby eliminating the need for the body to produce a symptom, or messenger. Of course an acute situation must be treated in order to relieve pain and suffering; then the true healing is approached from a deeper level. For example, if your child is suffering with recurring ear infections, the pain will of course be addressed immediately, then cause of the ear infections needs to be addressed to prevent recurrences. Repeated rounds of antibiotics are seldom a permanent solution. A qualified herbalist can help you discover the cause(s) and guide you in making educated decisions about how to achieve and maintain healthy ears. The same goes for many ailments including colds, flu, high blood pressure, gallbladder woes, urinary tract problems, prostate health, hormone imbalances of menopause and PMS, chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia, fibrocystic breast condition, uterine fibroids..... the list is endless.  So what are you waiting for?

Herbal medicine is not intended to take the place of traditional health care, but to work as part of a healing team for the highest healing good of those who seek wellness.

You may have considered seeing an herbalist, but aren’t quite sure if it’s the right thing for you.  Here is some information that might help
you to decide:

Q:  I’m under the care of a physician.  Can I work with an herbalist at the same time?

A:  Herbal medicine is an excellent and effective partner to traditional Western Medicine. Herbs, flower essences, aromatherapy, Reiki and other forms of natural healing are gentle and work with your body’s natural healing rhythms.  Your herbalist will teach you how to use herbs safely and effectively, and will be happy to work with your physician, therapist and nutritionist to help you achieve your health goals.

Q:  I saw an herbalist when I needed help with a serious illness that my doctors seemed unable to fix.  It made me wonder what other kinds of things my herbalist could help me with.

A:  A skilled herbalist can always help you in some way, whether you have a common cold, allergies, or you suffer from more debilitating illness, such as fibromyalgia, digestive disorders, headaches, arthritis, chronic fatigue, or even cancer.  There’s always some herb that can help – sometimes alone and sometimes in conjunction with traditional Western medicine. The miracle of modern diagnostics is not to be disputed. But there are many times when simple, non invasive plant medicine is perfect.

Q:  I take medication, prescribed by my doctor.  Should I tell my herbalist?  Can I take prescription medications with herbs?

A:  Your herbalist definitely needs to know if you’re taking prescription medications.  It’s very important.  Many people make the mistake of thinking that because herbal medicines are natural that they’re always safe – not true.  The wrong herb taken with medication can not only make you sick, it can be life threatening.

Q:  I’m thinking about starting a family.  Can my herbalist help me with this?

A:  Pregnancy and childbirth are at the top of the herbalist’s list of favorites!  Probably because it’s been part of life forever!  Your herbalist can make suggestions to help you through morning sickness, keep your uterus strong and toned and help prepare your body for the big day – and beyond!  She can even teach you how to keep your little one strong and healthy.  Oh, yes, mommies and babies are favorites among herbalists.  Oh, yes, daddy, too!

Q:  Do herbalists accept my health insurance?

A:  Unfortunately, most insurance companies do not reimburse for visits to your herbalist.  The good news here is that your records remain completely private, and between you and your herbalist.

Q:  How long is an herbal consultation, and how much can I expect to pay?

A:  You can expect the appointment to take between 1 and 2 hours and cost between $75-$90. Payment is made at the time of the appointment.  A sliding fee scale is available upon request.

Q:  What can I do to be prepared for my herbal consultation?

A:  1) Bring ALL your medications, supplements and over the counter drugs in their bottles.  It's very important that the herbalist know exactly what you're taking.

     2) Your herbalist needs to be able to see your skin, eyes, tongue and fingernails in order to accurately assess body imbalances.  It will be most helpful if you wear no makeup, contact lenses or nail polish.  If possible, do not brush your teeth for 3 hours before your visit.

     3)  Make a list of your allergies, surgeries and the other health care practitioners you're currently working with.
