HSV & HPV Infections: Sex-Positive, Queer and Trans-Inclusive Sexual Health and Beyond
HSV and HPV (herpes simplex virus and human papilloma virus, respectively) are common sexually transmitted infections for which herbalists can offer a great deal of support. And while sexual and/or reproductive health impacts are important, these viral infections are also associated with various cancers, neurodegenerative conditions, increased vulnerability to other infectious diseases, and more. As herbalists, we can play an important role in educating clients about the potential body-wide impacts of these infections, while remaining sex-positive and meeting clients where they’re at in terms of risk-tolerance and accessible protocols.
Over the course of the weekend, we’ll cover:
the pathophysiology, transmission, and impacts of HSV and HPV infections and how they differ
safer sex considerations to reduce transmission risks relevant to each virus, available testing, and vaccination
selecting and combining herbs for topical and internal protocols for different stages of HPV and HSV infections/outbreaks
specific plants, their optimum application and dose, and relevant research
special preps and medicine-making just for HPV and HSV
supportive strategies, including diet modifications, supplements, and lifestyle shifts
resources for further learning (for clinicians and clients)
The material will be drawn from clinical experience and rooted in both traditional herbal practice and current research. My teaching is queer and trans-affirming and inclusive, and relies on a trauma-informed, harm-reduction framework. Ultimately, my goal is to spread important information about risks and long-term health impacts, while dispelling shame and fear around discussion of sex and associated infections in both clinicians and clients. I want folks to have fun, ask tons of questions, and feel empowered to become affirming and knowledgeable sources of care for their clients and communities.
